R&D Q’s: How many Prototypes should I build?
Thomas Edison took 10,000 tries to build a lightbulb.
James Dyson build 5,126 prototypes of his bagless vacuum
More prototypes is better. Each one will improve the understanding of the idea.
Last year I wrote an article about spending your design/development budget on prototypes, not labor.
Prototypes don't have to be physical! Examples of prototype techniques:
Sketches and diagrams
3D printing or rapid model
Role-play through VR/AR
Use prototypes to learn what works (and what doesn't) as quickly as possible.
Have a great day!
